Ambien for Insomnia
Ambien is one of the newer drugs on the market to combat the effects of sleep deprivation. It is derived from the generic drug Zolpidem, which is a slow releasing hypnotic sedative made from lactose designed to relax the brain.
Working with chemicals in the brain, Ambien has been linked to the benzodiazepine class of drugs as the results are similar, and therefore the side effects can often be more serious. However, the effects of insomnia are more likely to be reduced on Ambien than with the older forms of sedative. How to Take AmbienIn order for the drug to take full effect, Ambien must be taken whole with water, and must be taken before bed, when the patient can have at least seven hours of solid sleep, as it can affect behaviour during waking hours. It is always important to follow the orders of the doctor when taking the prescribed dosage of the drug in weekly cycles.
There are many points to note when taking Ambien, as the hypnotic effect in the drug has been known to slow down reaction times in the body, and can cause excessive drowsiness even when no longer taking the medication.
It is wise to avoid
- driving
- operating machinery
- undertaking tasks
that require a person being fully alert and aware of the situations.
The effects of Ambien are increased when the patient drinks alcohol, and can therefore induce a zombie-like state.
Ambien Addiction
It is also very easy to become addicted to taking this drug, and should therefore only be used by the person who owns the prescription. The recreational use of this drug is in high numbers, especially among younger people.

Ambien Side Effects
When the drug is taken, it has been known to produce hallucinogenic effects or euphoric states when the user goes against the body's desire to sleep after taking the drug.
Other side effects from drug abuse are
- anxiety
- neurosis
- confusion and
- loss of balance
For these reasons it has been noted that Ambien should only be taken upon prescription, as the patient cannot guarantee that the ingredients are safe.
Withdrawal symptoms are common when Ambien is taken for long cycles, and some patients have reported severe effects such as
- stomach cramps
- sickness
- sweating and in worse cases
- seizures
It is worth noting that the sleep deprivation may return after finishing the course of medication. However, if the medication is reduced slowly, these side-effects are rare, and Ambien does have a high success rate in providing a reliever for the symptoms of insomnia.
Other side effects of taking Ambien are rare, although extremely serious. Because Ambien is a sedating medication, older patients are advised to be more wary when undertaking strenuous activity, as accidents are more likely to happen.
If any of the following effects are found, then a doctor or emergency physician should be sought out as soon as possible:
- repetition of insomnia periods
- depression, decreased inhibitions
- overly relaxed
- severe drowsiness
- anxiety, hallucinations
- amnesia or a change in behaviour or personality.
